Annoying the children, one day at a time.

An unpleasant trip to San Antonio

Monday, December 11, 2006 -- What a day. Our Shar Pei "Piglet" started coughing up blood yesterday - lots of it. I was up half the night checking on her, replacing one towel after another, and generally trying to keep her from slinging blood all over the house. Cathi and I drove her straight into Beeville this morning to have the vet check her out. After chest X-rays, he said she had a mass in her chest and we needed to take her to a specialist in San Antonio.

The San Antonio vet immediately put her hand down Piglet's throat and felt something abnormal. She didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the x-rays taken in Beeville and ordered another round targeting her throat. The new x-rays confirmed something was not quite right so we decided to have the vet do a more thorough examination with light anesthesia.

About this time, Piglet started coughing up blood again and seemed to collapse, losing control of her bladder. This upset Cathi pretty badly as it looked like she might be "crashing." Fortunately, she recovered nicely after the examination and a course of antibiotics and steroids. The vet took tissue samples from her throat and we expect to get the good or bad news within a week or so. At this point, it seems likely that she is suffering from some form of cancer, but, since she doesn't seem to be in pain, we are going to attempt to treat her with medication and take her off dry dog food.

The drive back from San Antonio was followed immediately by my regular monthly school board meeting. I missed the first two hours of the meeting and was pretty well exhausted when all was said and done.

I am so very sorry to hear about Piglet's health problems. I really hope it is something that can be treated, so that she will be well again. It's just awful to have something bad happen to a beloved pet.

Thanks Wanda. Piglet has had a good week so far, so we are hoping for the best.
