Annoying the children, one day at a time.

Not Quite There

Saturday, March 4, 2007 -- The runner rounded third base as Coach Gonzales windmilled his arms - the outfielder hit the cutoff man too late, the tying run was going to score - the runner dove for home plate and... STUCK in the grass 8 feet short of the plate. He scrambled to his feet too late - the shortstop made the throw to the catcher and the runner was called out. Yes, Zach had replaced his brother as a pinch runner at second base and went from hero to goat with 8 feet to spare. When he made the substitution, coach asked if he had "put the faster one on base?" He didn't ask if Zach knew how to slide. The opposing team went on to score 2 more runs. Final score: Marion 4 - Bobcats 1.

Zach's unfortunate baserunning incident in game 4 of the Yorktown tournament did not, however, overshadow his earlier performance on the mound in game 3 versus Nixon-Smiley. Zach had a perfect game going through the 4th inning and ended up pitching a no-hitter (with 1 walk, and 1 hit batter). Final score: Bobcats 12 - Nixon Smiley 2.

Josh played 3rd base in both games and went 2 for 6 at the plate with 2 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit-by-pitch.

Cathi and I joined most of the other parents at "Granny Di's" for lunch between games, and had time to spare for a little antique shopping and a visit to the local nursery. Yorktown seems to be a nice little town.
